Aeropress Guide

The AeroPress was invented by retired Stanford engineering lecturer Alan Adler. Adler began developing the brewer in 2004, with the intention of reducing acidity and bitterness in his daily cup of coffee. The device was officially unveiled in November 2005, at the CoffeeFest trade show in Seattle. In the years after its release, it gained a cult following among coffee enthusiasts, who praised it for its flexibility and consistency in brewing.

What is an Aeropress

The Aeropress brewer consists of a translucent cylindrical chamber, and a plunger with an airtight silicone seal, similar to a syringe. A filter cap is screwed onto the end, to hold a small round paper filter in place. Aeropress brews one small strong cup of coffee at a time. Its compact shape and plastic material make it great for road trips, camping or any type of travel.

  • Aeropress brewer
  • Aeropress filters*
  • 18g medium-fine ground coffee
  • Scale*
  • Timer (if one is not built into scale)
  • Kettle* / Hot Water (200g @ 205°)
  • Mug or carafe to brew into

  • Prepare your Aeropress by inserting the plunger about 1/4inch into the chamber.
  • Put the filter in the cap and presoak it to remove any paper taste.
  • Set the Aeropress plunger side down on your scale and tare it to 0.
  • Leave the cap off for now with the filter in the cap.

  • Put your ground coffee into the chamber.
  • Start your timer and add the 200g of hot water to the chamber all at once.
  • After 45 seconds of blooming, stir for 10 seconds and then put the cap on top of the Aeropress and lock it into place.
  • At 1:30, carefully flip over the Aeropress atop of your cup or carafe.
  • Slowly and gently but consistently press into it until the last bit of liquid leaves the chamber.
  • You can remove the cap over a trash can gently push the plunger, ejecting the used coffee.
